Battle Wings is a vertically scrolling arcade shooter from Data East released in 1984. Players pilot the FX-1 ship through 45 levels collecting power-up parts called "wings" to unlock progression and destroy the Gobunasu fortress. The game alternates between air and ground layers, the player can descend to the ground to avoid airborne attacks but remains vulnerable to ground threats. Movement uses an 8-way joystick with one button for shooting and another to toggle between levels. The dual-layer design adds tactical depth, letting players exploit weaknesses in either plane. Scoring mechanics are notoriously exploitable: rapid button presses during power-up animations net 2000 points each, enabling near-infinite extra lives. Reaching the 9,999,999 score cap takes over 20 minutes when maxed out. With its blend of straightforward action and exploitable scoring, Battle Wings became a staple in arcades for its accessibility and replay value. The 1986 Famicom port marked Data East's first home console release.
