BattleTanx is a 1998 tank-based shooter for Nintendo 64 where you drive a heavily armed vehicle through a post-apocalyptic United States. The world has collapsed after a virus and nuclear war leave society in ruins, and your character Griffin Spade roams from New York to San Francisco, battling rival gangs and scavenging for upgrades. The single-player campaign mixes open-world exploration with direct tank combat, letting you recruit allies and modify your vehicle as you progress. Split-screen modes add local co-op or competitive play for up to four players. The game’s split-screen multiplayer remains its strongest feature, offering couch co-op that feels responsive for its time. Players highlight the variety of environments like crumbling cities and desert outposts, along with tank customization options that let you tweak weapons and armor. Though the over-the-top story about recovering a missing fiancée might feel dated, the focus on straightforward vehicular combat and shared local play keeps it memorable for older N64 fans.
