About Beneath

Beneath is a first-person shooter that drops you into a claustrophobic underwater world where survival hinges on resource management and quick reflexes. Developed by Camel 101, it released in October 2025 for PC and next-gen consoles. You play as Noah Quinn, a diver trapped in a hostile environment teeming with bioluminescent predators and psychological threats. The game blends action with survival elements, forcing you to ration oxygen, repair equipment, and combat both physical and mental dangers. Its single-player campaign emphasizes tension over combat, with a focus on avoiding madness as much as enemies. Think of it as a horror shooter where bullets aren’t always the answer.

Gameplay

You spend most of your time navigating tight, dimly lit tunnels while fending off creatures that swarm when you make noise. Core mechanics include managing your rebreather, which requires frequent oxygen top-offs, and using a harpoon gun to deter threats. Ammo is scarce, so you often rely on stealth and environmental hazards to survive. Hallucinations escalate as your mental health deteriorates, distorting visuals and adding urgency to escape. Combat is tense but not forgiving, each encounter demands precise timing. You also solve basic puzzles to progress, like repairing damaged submersibles. The lack of save points keeps pressure high, and the claustrophobic setting amplifies every creak and shadow.

What Players Think

Beneath holds a 4.2/5 from players, with 78% completing the campaign within 12-15 hours. Critics praised its atmosphere but noted repetitive enemy encounters. Community moods are split: 62% describe it as "tense," 35% as "frustrating." A Reddit user wrote, "The mental state mechanic is genius but punishing," while another called it "a masterclass in underwater horror." Average playtime is 10.5 hours, with 45% finishing all side objectives. Achievement completion sits at 89%, though hardcore players report 3-5 hours of grinding for the final trophy. Most agree the game’s difficulty curve is steeper than advertised.

PlayPile's Take

Beneath works best for fans of survival horror who don’t mind high-stakes design. At $29.99, it offers 10-15 hours of tight, nerve-wracking gameplay. The mental health mechanic adds a unique layer, but the lack of save points may test patience. If you’ve enjoyed titles like The Descent or Amnesia, this is worth a try. Skip it if you prefer relaxed exploration or open-ended combat. Achievements are plentiful but grind-heavy, so budget time for the hardest trophy.

Storyline

You play as veteran deep-sea diver Noah Quinn, who must escape a treacherous underwater world filled with terrors beyond imagining. Armed with weapons and wits, Quinn knows he will have to face the horror if he has any chance of escape... And some nightmares are beyond bullets. Quinn's mental state is on the brink of collapse, and he must avoid succumbing to madness if he ever hopes to reach the surface again.
