Bermuda Triangle is a 1982 scrolling shooter from the Atari 2600 where you command a massive battleship called ZIG stuck in the past. The screen scrolls both up and down as you dodge waves of enemies, collect power-ups, and survive nine levels to face each stage’s boss. Your ship can take multiple hits and fires in two modes: a fixed forward shot and an 8-direction turret. Bonus SYD ships stick close, forming defensive squads that block attacks but die when hit. Energy pickups restore health or boost firepower, adding a layer of risk-reward to every move. The game stands out for its cooperative play options and responsive combat. SYD ships act as both shields and distractions, making co-op runs feel dynamic. The turret’s 8-way fire, controlled on the PlayStation version via shoulder buttons, adds a tactical edge rarely seen in 8-bit shooters. Though the 2600 port simplifies some systems, its blend of durable ship mechanics and vertical scrolling keeps it fresh compared to side-scrollers of the era. Classic arcade fans often rank it among the era’s most inventive dual-player experiences.
