Beyond Dark Castle is a 1980s platformer where you play Prince Duncan, navigating treacherous environments to reclaim his kingdom. The goal is to gather five magical orbs hidden in a spinning Ante Room behind the Black Knight’s throne. Each orb unlocks progress toward a final duel with the game’s titular antagonist. Players leap over hazards, solve simple puzzles, and battle enemies in a straightforward but mechanically precise setup. The Macintosh version emphasizes quick reflexes and exploration more than narrative depth. This sequel adds layers to its predecessor’s formula with the orb-collecting mechanic and a slightly expanded world. While the planned colorized remake never materialized, the original remains a niche artifact of early PC gaming. Its 1987 release date and single-player focus make it a curious relic for retro fans. The spinning wall reveal at game start and gargoyle-driven lore from previous entries hint at a loose story thread, but the real draw is the tight, arcade-style gameplay that rewards precise jumps and quick thinking.
This sequel to Dark Castle has our formerly nameless hero now known as Prince Duncan continuing his adventures after he toppled the Black Knight's throne and was dropped by a gargoyle in Trouble 3. With Merlin's help, Prince Duncan finds his way behind the Black Knight's throne where there is a fireplace and mantle. At the start of each new game, Duncan tries to take a torch on the wall beside the fireplace, and the entire wall spins around to reveal a large Ante Room containing 5 pedestals for holding orbs. Your mission is to collect all 5 orbs to open a gate to lead you to a final duel with The Black Knight.
