"As a simulation, Birthdays the Beginning is a fairly unique approach to the open-world sandbox simulator. It does a fantastic job of demonstrating how important it's to maintain balance within an ecosystem, in order for life to thrive. It also helps to drive home how even the smallest of organisms can make a gigantic impact on the world around them. The main issue is that the campaign is so focused on introducing new mechanics that it seems to lose sight of this unspoken thesis. In turn, this leads the player on a mission to track down answers that should instead be provided to them at a glance. Due to this, it's hard to shake the feeling of being thrown into the deep end of an algae coated swamp, without a life raft."

Birthdays the Beginning casts you as a god of tiny cube-shaped worlds. You tweak terrain layouts, set temperature ranges, and adjust resource placements to see how life adapts. Over time simple organisms evolve into complex ecosystems based on your environmental choices. The gameplay loops around trial and error worldbuilding with a focus on climate mechanics and biological emergence. The game leans heavily into open-ended experimentation though player reception has been split. A 60.3 average on IGDB suggests the creative systems appeal to some but not all. Available on PS4, PC, and Switch it offers solo play only with no multiplayer elements. While not a commercial hit it retains a niche audience interested in procedural evolution simulations. The core concept of shaping life through climate control remains its defining trait.
