Block Man 1 is a puzzle game where you guide a character through rooms filled with walls, pits, and exits. Your tools are limited to moving left or right, picking up or placing bricks, and climbing a single brick at a time. Each level requires rearranging these bricks to clear paths and reach the exit. The simplicity of controls contrasts with the clever spatial reasoning needed to solve increasingly tricky layouts. The shareware version offers ten levels, with the full game unlocking additional challenges and a level constructor tool. The game’s charm lies in its minimalism and the story framing it as a royal test of worthiness. Players take on a commoner trying to win a princess’s hand by solving block-based puzzles designed by a king. While the DOS-era visuals are basic, the focus on pure logic and resourcefulness keeps it engaging. The constructor mode adds replayability, letting players craft and share their own puzzles. Released in 1994, it remains a concise example of puzzle design done with few tools but high thinking.
The story behind the game is that once upon a time King Triangulos ruled the kingdom of Bentangle. The king loved blocks, he'd played with them since he was a child and he loved them almost as much as he loved his daughter, the beautiful Princess Pentaguin. The princess must marry someone worthy so the king had a series of rooms constructed such that extreme cleverness in moving and using blocks was necessary to escape from each. The suitor who could complete all these puzzles would be a fit match for his daughter. Block-man is a commoner in the land of Bentangle but he loved the princess nonetheless and vowed to win her hand in marriage.
