Bonkheads is a 2D platformer where you swing a hammer to fight bugs and other critters invading your planet. Play alone or team up with a friend for co-op brawls across scrolling levels. Each stage throws waves of enemies at you requiring timing and basic platforming skills. The simple controls and repetitive enemy patterns make it easy to pick up but tedious for some. Released in 1997 it runs on older systems and retains a pixel art style typical of 90s games. What lingers is the co-op mode which lets two players tackle waves together. Reviews at launch praised the frantic action but some called the level design repetitive. With a 72 on Metacritic it’s remembered more for nostalgia than lasting innovation. The bugs never stop coming and neither does the hammer swinging. A relic of late 90s PC gaming that still works for short bursts of chaotic pest control.
