Gearbox Software dropped this DLC on September 10, 2020, for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Nintendo Switch. It serves as the fourth campaign add-on for Borderlands 3, shifting focus from standard treasure hunting to a deep dive into the mind of Krieg, the game's resident psycho. You join forces with scientist Patricia Tannis to explore Vaulthalla, a mythical location said to drive anyone who learns its secrets mad. The premise involves beaming your Vault Hunter character directly into Krieg's fractured consciousness. This means you will navigate surreal landscapes inside his head while battling his raging inner voice alongside a calmer persona. It is a single-player focused experience that still supports multiplayer and co-op play, letting you bring friends along for the ride into madness.
You control your Vault Hunter as you cross dreamlike zones within Krieg's psyche. The core loop involves shooting enemies while managing two distinct internal states of your companion character. One state is a screaming murder machine that deals massive damage but moves unpredictably. The other is a calm voice that offers tactical support and defensive buffs. You must switch between these personas or coordinate with them to solve environmental puzzles and defeat bosses. Typical sessions last for several hours as you complete narrative missions, hunt down hidden collectibles, and fight through twisted meat-filled landscapes. The controls feel standard for the series but introduce new mechanics tied to the dual-persona system. You will spend most of your time aiming, shooting, and switching modes to adapt to changing combat scenarios or unlock new areas within the mindscape.
Players on PlayPile have rated this experience with an average score of 78 out of 100 based on fifteen IGDB ratings. The community mood leans heavily toward "surreal" and "chaotic," reflecting the game's focus on madness rather than traditional storytelling. Average playtime hovers around six to eight hours for a main story run, though completionists spend significantly longer hunting for hidden secrets inside Krieg's head. Review snippets often mention the visual design as standout while noting the narrative can feel disjointed without prior knowledge of the character. Community stats show that 65% of players who started the campaign finished it, suggesting strong engagement despite the niche premise. The co-op playability remains a high point, with many users praising the ability to share the hallucinogenic experience with friends in real time.
This DLC works best if you already own Borderlands 3 and enjoyed Krieg's character enough to want more. At no additional cost for owners of the base game, it offers roughly seven hours of content that stands apart from the main campaign's loot grind. The achievement list includes specific challenges tied to the dual-persona mechanics, which adds replay value if you missed certain interactions. I would not recommend this to anyone who has never touched the first three games because the emotional weight relies entirely on prior context. It is a wild detour that succeeds visually but lacks the tight pacing of a standalone title. Buy it only if you need more reasons to keep playing Borderlands 3 before moving on.
Brilliant scientist Patricia Tannis may have cracked one of the galaxy's greatest mysteries: what makes the Borderlands' psychos so uniformly deranged? She believes the answer lies with Vaulthalla, a mythical place that induces insanity in all who learn its true nature. Of course, your average psycho isn't going to peacefully sit still and share Vaulthalla's secrets, so the closest you can get to a willing participant is Krieg, a fellow Crimson Raider and the most badass psycho there is. Problem is, Krieg's not the best communicator, what with all his aggressive, barely coherent screaming. Using technology that lesser intellects couldn't possibly comprehend, Tannis is beaming you and your fellow Vault Hunters directly into Krieg's consciousness so you can discover Vaulthalla for yourself. You'll need to team up with both of Krieg's opposing personas—a raging murder machine and a calm inner voice—if you want any chance of surviving his twisted, meat-filled mindscapes and reaping Vaulthalla's rewards.
