Bouken Jidai Katsugeki: Goemon is a 3D adventure RPG in the Ganbare Goemon series. Released in 2000 for PlayStation 2, it marks the third entry to use 3D environments but shifts away from the series’ signature comedy. The story follows Goemon navigating feudal Japan, using stealth, combat, and puzzle-solving to advance. Gameplay blends platforming sections with turn-based battles, though the single-player campaign leans heavier on narrative than action. The lack of multiplayer or online features keeps the focus on its standalone story. This title stands out for ditching the usual goofy tone in favor of a more dramatic approach. Developer KCE and publisher Konami took a risk here, but the result feels uneven to many fans. Community reception is mixed, with some praising the bold direction and others missing the humor. Despite its age, it remains a rare example of a Japanese adventure RPG experimenting with tone. The PlayStation 2 version hasn’t been re-released digitally, making physical copies the only way to play.
