Capcom Fighting All-Stars started as a 2D sequel before shifting into a 3D brawler featuring a roster of Capcom legends. Players team up to stop a villain named Death from detonating a bomb called Laughter Sun in Metro City. The story mode requires you to find three Code Holders who possess the keys to disarm the device. Your performance and how quickly you finish the mission determine which ending you get. This arcade style beat em up relies on classic fighting mechanics translated into a 3D space, a move that was tricky given the shift in perspective for these specific characters. The project faced significant hurdles before its cancellation in 2003 due to poor beta test results and long development cycles. Rumors persist about a secret playable character from SNK that resembled K' or Kyo Kusanagi, though this never made it into the final build. It stands out as a fascinating piece of gaming history that almost connected two major fighting universes before falling apart. Many fans view the unfinished nature of the title as a missed opportunity rather than just another canceled project from that era. The game remains a curiosity for those who follow behind-the-scenes stories of how big franchises get reshaped during production.
The shadow of fear was approaching Metro City. A man only known as Death, was running around Metro City with a bomb. The bomb was codenamed "Laughter Sun". Mayor Mike Haggar contacted the characters listed above in order to locate and defeat Death and then defuse the bomb. Codes were needed to disarm the bomb, and that is where the Code Holders subtitle of the game comes into play. D.D. and his teammates, Rook and Ingrid, were the Code Holders. Their codes are Ogre, Fallen Angel, and Isis. The game had a time limit, and depending of how long the player took to finish the game, the ending would vary.
