Cart Life is a simulation game where you run a street cart business while balancing personal responsibilities. Choose from three characters each with distinct roles: selling bagels, newspapers, or coffee. Manage inventory prices and equipment to keep customers coming back. But beyond the commerce you must track health daily needs and family obligations. Each character faces specific struggles like parenting financial pressure or personal goals that add layers to the gameplay. What sets it apart is the focus on real life challenges alongside business management. The stories feel grounded with moments of quiet tension like a parent juggling shifts to spend time with a child. Though released in 2010 it maintains a strong 82% on Metacritic for its emotional depth and thoughtful design. The lack of handholding means success requires patience but the payoff in character moments makes the effort feel meaningful.
In Cart Life, players control one of three characters, each of whom has a different street vending job; Vinny sells bagels, Andrus runs a newspaper stand, and Melanie sells coffee from a cart. While at their stalls players interact with customers by selling them items and can manage their stall by selecting stock, setting prices, and buying new equipment. Players must also look after the character's day-to-day lives, including having adequate food, drink, and sleep. Each character has unique situations to address; Melanie, for example, is a single mother of a daughter. When she's not working, she yearns to bond more with her daughter, in the midst of her difficult busy life. She struggles to have time to walk her daughter to and from school each day, as she seeks custody on limited wages.
