About Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 dropped on February 25, 2014, as the thirty-fifth entry in the long-running franchise. MercurySteam built this sequel for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC before departing the series entirely. Konami handled publishing duties. The story jumps Gabriel Belmont forward to his life as Dracula across medieval and modern settings. You control a vampire lord navigating an open world while hunting down Satan after Zobek warns of his return. This title stands as the final chapter from MercurySteam within the Castlevania universe, offering a darker tone than its 2010 predecessor with a focus on reclaiming lost powers inside your own castle.

Gameplay

You fight through this open world using three distinct weapons instead of the previous magic system. The Blood Whip remains your primary tool for crowd control, while the Chaos Claws shatter enemy defenses and the Void Sword heals you during combat. Sessions involve crossing vast areas to hunt specific targets or explore hidden zones in your castle. A movable camera gives you better control over the action compared to the fixed angles of the first game. You manage health by striking enemies with the Void Sword rather than collecting items. The story mode runs significantly longer than the original, requiring you to switch between weapons frequently to handle different enemy types and environmental puzzles scattered throughout the map.

What Players Think

PlayPile members have spent an average of 18 hours completing this title, though many return for full exploration. IGDB shows a score of 68.3 out of 100 based on 141 ratings, reflecting mixed feelings about the execution. Community moods hover around "satisfied" for those who enjoy brutal combat but dip to "frustrated" when dealing with camera angles or repetitive boss fights. Review snippets often praise the weapon variety while criticizing the open world design for feeling empty at times. Completion rates sit at 72 percent, suggesting a significant portion of players stop after the main narrative concludes without chasing every achievement. The data shows a clear divide between fans who loved the combat mechanics and critics who found the pacing uneven.

PlayPile's Take

This game fits players who want deep combat systems and don't mind a linear story wrapped in an open world shell. At launch, it was priced around $60 but often drops to $15 on sale today. You can earn 47 achievements if you hunt for every secret in the castle or find all collectibles. The camera issues and repetitive exploration might turn some people off, but the weapon mechanics remain solid. If you just want a quick run through the story, you will finish in under twenty hours. Buy it only if you enjoy watching your health bar regenerate mid-fight and don't mind revisiting the same areas multiple times.

Storyline

Dracula (Gabriel) awakens many years after the events of the previous Lords of Shadow title. He has been warned by Zobek of the return of Satan and sets out to regain his powers so that he may face Satan once again. The key to him regaining his power lies in his castle. However, the famed Belmont clan and his son Alucard seek his ultimate destruction.
