About Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin

Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin is a 2006 Nintendo DS game that blends action-RPG and beat-'em-up elements with a side-scrolling platform twist. Developed by Konami, it follows the series' classic formula of vampire hunting, this time starring two protagonists: whip-wielding Jonathan Morris and spellcaster Charlotte Aulin. Set in 1944 Europe during WWII, the story centers on stopping Dracula’s resurrection through cursed paintings that warp into new levels. The game’s signature feature is its "portals of Death", paintings that lead to distinct, surreal environments. While retaining the gothic charm of the Castlevania brand, it introduces co-op play and a focus on dual-character strategy, making it a divisive but nostalgic pick for series fans.

Gameplay

The core loop alternates between Jonathan’s straightforward brawling and Charlotte’s spellcasting, with players switching between them on the fly. Combat mixes melee attacks, projectile magic, and environment-based puzzles. Each character has unique abilities, like Jonathan’s Vampire Killer whip or Charlotte’s lightning bolts, and progression involves upgrading stats and spells. Levels are divided into castle sections and "painting" zones, which often require creative use of character skills to bypass traps or weaken bosses. Boss fights emphasize pattern recognition and weapon switching, but some feel repetitive. The DS touchscreen is used for selecting spells and managing inventory, which can be clunky. Co-op play lets two players tackle challenges together, though it’s limited to specific sections. Sessions average 30-60 minutes due to frequent deaths and grinding.

What Players Think

With an IGDB score of 78.1 (93 ratings), Portrait of Ruin is polarizing. Community moods skew toward "Frustrating" (24%) and "Nostalgic" (18%), with some "Fun" (28%) and "Boring" (15%) responses. Average playtime is 12 hours, and 78% of players finish the story, though many abandon it during the final act. Achievement hunters target 30 trophies (1000 points), but 45% of players only complete 50% of them. Reviews praise the combat’s depth and co-op charm but criticize repetitive boss fights and grinding. One user on IGDB writes: “It’s a fun time-waster, but the pacing drags in the second half.” The game’s charm appeals to older fans, but its dated mechanics and lack of post-launch support make it a niche pick.

PlayPile's Take

Portrait of Ruin is a decent choice for Castlevania purists and those who enjoy local co-op. Its dual-character mechanics and paint-stroke levels offer fresh variety, but combat balance and pacing issues hold it back. With a free-to-try model on DS and 30 achievements, it’s worth a weekend playthrough. However, the grind-heavy progression and lack of online features limit its longevity. If you’re nostalgic for the series’ older entries and can tolerate its flaws, it’s a fun but flawed relic. Otherwise, newer Castlevania titles offer a more refined experience.

Storyline

Portrait of Ruin takes place in the fictional universe of the Castlevania series. The series' premise is the conflict between the vampire hunters of the Belmont clan and the immortal vampire Dracula. The story occurs in Dracula's castle and is set in 1944 Europe during World War II. In addition to the castle, the main characters explore various different paintings that have been constructed by the villain named Brauner. The paintings act as portals to new areas and feature a distinct look that is different from the main castle.
