Catacomb II is a top-down action game where you navigate ancient ruins hunting for treasure while battling hordes of goblins, skeletons, and other nasties. You play as a sorcerer using magical abilities to clear paths, break traps, and blast enemies. The game sticks to the same formula as its 1990 predecessor but expands the dungeon to 30 levels. Exploration feels like a maze of interconnected rooms and secret corridors. Combat is fast and chaotic, with enemies swarming from all directions. Progress is tracked through a straightforward health system and a handful of power-ups that let you punch through walls or freeze foes in place. This 1991 DOS title is a direct line to early PC action games. The lack of modern conveniences like quick saves adds tension, but nine save slots help pace the grind. While it never deviates much from the original’s structure, the added depth in level design keeps things from feeling repetitive. Retro gamers on itch.io note it’s a solid bridge between the first Catacomb and its 1991 3D sequel. Simple, punishing, and oddly addictive for a 30-year-old dungeon crawl.
