Caves of Doom is a 1985 platformer that tasks you with navigating a character through perilous caverns. You move horizontally and vertically across screens, dodging enemies and environmental hazards while seeking escape routes. Each level holds multiple exits, requiring exploration to find the right path toward five keys, three of which are split into pieces. The challenge lies in avoiding faceless adversaries and deadly traps without weapons, relying on timing and spatial awareness to survive. Released on ZX Spectrum and Amstrad CPC, this game leans into the hardware limitations of its era while maximizing tension through tight controls and punishing layouts. Its non linear design and scarcity of checkpoints have kept it memorable among retro gamers. While modern by today’s standards, its difficulty curve and lack of mercy make it a test of persistence as much as skill.
Whilst exploring the planet Doom you were captured by the guards of the ruthless Lord of Darkness. You are now imprisoned in caves deep within the bowels of Doom but are determined to escape. To do so you must find five keys, one of which is in three pieces, which are scattered around the caves. However, the odds are against you as the Lord of Darkness has laid traps in the caves and has sent many thousands of this bloodthirsty minions to thwart your mission. You are unarmed and therefore, must use your wits to avoid certaind death on Doom.
