Cavewars is a turn-based strategy game where you build armies, research units, and manage resources across layered cave environments. Each turn involves moving troops, defending bases, and expanding through different cave levels. Combat unfolds on grids that stack vertically, letting battles on upper levels influence lower ones. You choose from eight factions with distinct strengths and train units that evolve as you unlock upgrades. The DOS interface keeps things straightforward but mechanically deep. What sets it apart is the vertical battlefield. Conflicts on level three might distract enemies from your assault on level one, forcing creative positioning. Randomly generated maps and asymmetric starting conditions keep each playthrough different. Though overlooked by modern audiences, fans of classic TBS praise its tactical complexity and replay value. The 1996 release still holds up for its clever use of space and resource management.
