China Syndrome is a 1982 arcade shooter for the Atari 2600 where you control a robot arm to contain a nuclear reactor meltdown. The screen splits into three sections with color-coded zones, each tracking radiation levels. Your goal is to grab floating particles before they split, raising danger. As levels progress you must avoid damaging circulation fans or risk losing an arm. The game ends when all arms are gone or after clearing nine stages testing your multitasking and quick reflexes. The game’s standout is its split screen design forcing players to prioritize between three areas under pressure. With no room for error later levels introduce strategic depth as fan damage becomes a liability. While short on frills its tense particle chasing and escalating stakes offer a test of focus. Released over 40 years ago it remains a niche example of early arcade tension on one of gaming’s first major consoles.
