This 2008 visual novel from Propeller pits two factions against each other in a fractured reality. Players take control of either Alfred Arrowsmith or Kuki Youkou, each starting mid-conflict with their own unresolved goals. A rogue youkai entity tasks them with building a new world from the remnants of two colliding realms. Choices in each character’s story shape their path through supernatural politics and personal reckonings. After completing both campaigns, a third route reveals the war between the Ayakashibito and Bullet Butlers teams escalating into full-scale chaos across a broken, shifting city. The game leans into its cult status as a meeting point for two niche anime properties, blending their lore into a single, tangled narrative. Branching routes offer distinct perspectives before merging into a frenetic final act where alliances shatter. While the story grows convoluted, long-time fans praise the chaotic energy of the clash between opposing factions. With minimal combat mechanics and a focus on dialogue, it leans heavily on its premise of colliding fictional universes to keep things moving.
Depending on which route you choose, you start out as either Alfred Arrowsmith, after his united front with Rick against Gustave, or Kuki Youkou after his final confrontation with Soushichi. Ungaikyou (literary means the mirror beyond the clouds), a youkai made from the failure attempt of the mirror of the three artifacts belonging to Amaterasu (the Sun god in Japanese mythology), has chosen these two to help them create a world of their own. In exchange, Alfred and Kuki are temporary exempt from going to the netherworld and finish their lingering desires…in their non-respective worlds. After the completion of the two stories, the final route—Chronobelt—unlocks. Almost immediately after Kuki and Alfred finish dealing with their lingering desires, invaders have slipped through the portals and into the Infinite Corridors (the space connecting the two worlds). Before long, team Ayakashibito is in a constant war with team Bullet Butlers in what can only be described as the city of Chaos.
