Circus is an arcade adventure game from 1977 that leans into simple but tactile fun. You spin a dial to aim at a row of floating balloons on screen, popping them before they drift off. The gameplay is straightforward but requires timing and precision, with the challenge ramping up as more balloons fill the screen. The game uses a 6502 processor to handle logic, making it an early example of arcade machines shifting from hardwired circuits to programmable systems. The cabinet’s design stands out with its cheerful red balloon art and a front bezel featuring clowns and multicolored balloons. A black-and-white display tricks the eye into seeing colored rows via a color overlay, a clever technical workaround for the era. Designed by Edward Valeau and Howell Ivey, Circus was a commercial hit with production estimates between 13,000 and 20,000 units. Its blend of accessibility and quirky presentation made it a fixture in arcades during the late 1970s.
