The Union is controlled by the computer in solo play or by another player in competitive mode. Victory requires winning eight battles through tactical resource management and calculated risk-taking. Developed by high school students in 1968 this early strategy title blends historical context with simple mechanics that emphasize logistical challenges over combat spectacle. The two-player mode added later by educators turned classroom project into a competitive staple. With no complex unit management or map exploration its focus on supply-line tension and outcome-based scoring makes it a surprisingly durable relic of 1970s programming education.
