The Gold Edition adds local multiplayer options including hotseat and network play, allowing up to 10 players to compete. While the core loop remains focused on long-term planning and civilization development, the edition introduces adjusted artificial intelligence behaviors that make interactions more aggressive and less predictable compared to earlier versions. This version removes all original music tracks from the base game, replacing them with a limited selection of new compositions. The altered AI prioritizes constant conflict over diplomacy, rendering negotiation systems largely ineffective. Despite these changes, the multiplayer features remained popular among dedicated strategy fans. The edition was later included in the 2006 Civilization Chronicles compilation, which helped reintroduce the franchise to newer audiences.
