About Clannad

Clannad is a visual novel adventure developed by Key and published by Visual Art's Motto back in April 2004. You start on PC or legacy mobile devices as Tomoya Okazaki, a disengaged high school senior dealing with family trauma. The story kicks off when he helps Nagisa Furukawa, a clumsy girl trying to revive the school drama club. What follows is a long-form narrative about connecting with five distinct female characters and fixing their personal issues before graduation. This title set sales records in Japan upon release and remains a benchmark for the genre decades later. It relies entirely on text and static art to tell a heavy emotional story without any combat or exploration mechanics.

Gameplay

Sessions involve reading blocks of text while choices appear at key moments to steer the narrative path. You spend most of your time clicking through dialogue trees that determine which character route you enter. Each girl has her own scenario filled with specific events, arguments, and quiet moments that define their relationship with Tomoya. The game tracks your decisions to unlock different endings or miss them entirely if you pick the wrong options. There are no mini-games or action sequences. You simply progress through chapters at your own pace, unlocking new scenes based on how well you handled previous conversations. The entire experience revolves around making these branching choices to see how each storyline concludes.

What Players Think

PlayPile data shows this title holds a Metacritic score of 83 out of 100 from critics who praised its writing. Community moods lean heavily toward emotional and reflective, with users often reporting an average playtime of forty hours or more to finish all routes. Completion rates drop significantly for players who stop after the main school arc without exploring the side storylines. User reviews frequently mention the game's ability to induce crying rather than excitement. The community notes that while the pacing feels slow initially, the payoff in later chapters justifies the time investment. Most dedicated fans rate it as a top-tier entry in the visual novel catalog based on these metrics.

PlayPile's Take

You should buy Clannad if you want a story-driven experience and do not mind reading thousands of lines of text. The price is reasonable for the amount of content you get, especially given the multiple endings tied to specific achievements. This game works best for people who can sit through slow emotional beats and care about character development over action. It is not a game for those seeking fast pacing or replayability based on skill. Finish the main route and then commit time to the side stories if you want the full picture. The data suggests only the most patient players get the complete experience this game offers.

Storyline

Tomoya Okazaki is a third year high school student at Hikarizaka Private High School, leading a life full of resentment. His mother passed away in a car accident when he was young, leading his father, Naoyuki, to resort to alcohol and gambling to cope. This resulted in constant fights between the two until Naoyuki dislocated Tomoya’s shoulder. Unable to play on his basketball team, Tomoya began to distance himself from other people. Ever since he has had a distant relationship with his father, naturally becoming a delinquent over time. While on a walk to school, Tomoya meets a strange girl named Nagisa Furukawa, questioning if she likes the school at all. He finds himself helping her, and as time goes by, Tomoya finds his life heading towards a new direction.
