Columns II builds on the block-stacking mechanics of its predecessor with time-travel themed levels and added speed challenges. Players guide multicolored gems as they fall into a grid aiming to clear them by aligning three of the same color in a row. Each cleared set earns points but the pace quickens over time forcing quick decisions. The sequel introduces new power-ups and a shifting color palette that changes as levels progress adding layers of strategy beyond basic pattern matching. Originally exclusive to Japanese arcades the game gained wider attention through its Saturn re-release bundled with the first title. While not as widely discussed as classic puzzle titles it maintains a small but dedicated following among fans of 90s arcade design. With 80 built-in levels and support for competitive two-player modes it offers straightforward puzzle action that emphasizes reflexes as much as planning.
