Communist Mutants from Space is a retro shooter for the Atari 2600 that leans into the fast-paced chaos of 1980s arcade classics. As a lone cannon operator, you battle waves of communist alien mutants hatching from eggs at the screen’s top. Each wave introduces new threats, but the real challenge lies in defeating the Mother Creature before it spawns more enemies. Lose your three cannons to enemy contact or bombs, and it’s game over. The action never lets up as you juggle survival and strategy across increasingly frantic waves. What sets it apart is the surprising depth of customization. Toggle shield mode to briefly become invincible, or use time warp to slow down enemies. Choose between guided fire for precise targeting or penetrating shots that take out multiple targets. Up to four players can share two joysticks, though coordination is key, players one and three share control, as do two and four. The game’s Cold War satirical edge, including a Mother Creature driven mad by irradiated vodka, adds a campy charm. For a 1982 title, its mix of options and multiplayer feels surprisingly modern.
Aliens from the communist planet of Rooskee are invading peaceful, democratic planets and turning their inhabitants into "Communist Mutants." The communist mutant armies are controlled by the Mother Creature, a strange alien who has gone mad due to irradiated vodka.
