Congo's Caper is a side-scrolling platformer from Data East that drops you into a chaotic jungle adventure. You play as a half-human monkey trying to rescue your girlfriend from a demon-kid while navigating 35 levels full of ghosts, pirates, ninjas, and dinosaurs. The controls are straightforward, run, jump, attack, and collect rubies to power up. Hitting enemies or hazards turns you back into a weaker monkey, adding tension to every leap. The game supports single-player or split-screen co-op, letting you team up to tackle traps and bosses like a T-Rex. What stands out is the wild variety of settings, from underwater caverns to floating castles, each packed with hazards and hidden gems. The transformation mechanic keeps you guessing, stay powerful by collecting rubies, but one hit resets your form. With its fast-paced action and over a dozen years of SNES nostalgia, it’s a throwback that still delivers tight gameplay. The presence of secret levels and power-ups adds replay value, though the difficulty spikes can catch you off guard.
The protagonist Congo searches for the kidnapped Congette. He is a "superkid," a monkey turned into a half-human. Getting hit will turn the player back into a monkey. Collecting three rubies will turn the player into Super Congo who has special powers.
