Cool Spot is a 1993 platformer based on 7 Up’s cartoonish mascot. You control a red-and-white character with sunglasses and limbs, navigating side-scrolling levels to rescue trapped duplicates. Each stage requires collecting a set number of “spots”, the game’s currency, scattered across the environment. These act as both score boosters and gatekeepers for progression. The end goal shifts per level, so you might loop around or backtrack to unlock exits. The controls and physics feel familiar but responsive, with hazards and obstacles demanding timing and precision. The game tied into a 7 Up ad campaign, making the mascot oddly memorable. It launched on SNES, Genesis, and others, though it’s best remembered for its simple charm. With an average Metacritic of 67, it’s a niche title that fans of old-school platforming might appreciate. The repetitive level design doesn’t help, but the challenge of gathering enough spots to escape each stage keeps things engaging.
In each level the player must rescue other cool spots, who look exactly alike, from cages at the end of that level, which is not necessarily the point at the far right of the level map. In order to do so, the player is required to collect a certain number of "spots" that would change (usually increase) as the game progressed. "Spots" were placed across the level in large quantities, and were the game's substitute for items such as the coins in Super Mario Bros
