Cosmic Cop casts you as a member of a private security force battling rogue vehicles infected by alien Bydo organisms. The game’s side scrolling action tasks you with dodging and shooting waves of "Mad Cars" while navigating tight corridors and open highways. Each level mixes fast paced combat with moments of cautious maneuvering as you avoid obstacles and enemy attacks. The Irem M-84 board delivers crisp visuals and responsive controls that keep the action tight even during chaotic firefights. Though not part of the R-Type series proper the game shares enough DNA to feel familiar to fans of the franchise. Many of its mechanics including powerups and vehicle designs would later appear in R-Type Final. Arcade players in 1991 found it stood apart with its focus on vehicular combat and varied level design. While lacking the sci fi lore depth of its contemporaries it remains a respected entry in Irem’s shooter catalog for its pure action execution.

Storyline

Taking place concurrently with R-Type Delta, Cosmic Cop sees the player as a member of the like-named private security organization tasked with hunting down autonomous vehicles driven berserk by the Bydo, dubbed "Mad Cars."
