Cosmic Swarm is a retro arcade shooter where you defend a space outpost from alien termites building nests. You control a ship that blasts the pests as they swarm your base. The main goal is to stop the termites from constructing nests by shooting them. However the real challenge comes from the nest blocks. These need to be energized before they can be destroyed which you do by hitting the blocks while they’re being carried. Once a block is on the ground you can only destroy it if it’s been energized. The twist of needing to time shots to energize nests adds a layer of strategy. Missing this window leaves you vulnerable to growing structures. With simple graphics and frantic action it’s a test of reflexes and planning. Released in 1982 it’s a relic of early arcade conversions showing how gameplay can overcome technical limits. A forgotten gem for those who miss 8-bit challenges.
