About Costume Quest

Costume Quest launched in 2010 as a turn-based RPG adventure from Double Fine Productions. You play as one of two twins, Wren or Reynold, who move to Auburn Pines on Halloween night. The story kicks off when your sibling gets snatched by monsters because they look like a giant talking candy corn. Your goal is to rescue them by fighting through suburban streets, a creepy carnival, and a monster-filled mall. You collect candy and trade cards to power up homemade costumes that become real superpowers in battle. The game supports multiple platforms including PC, consoles, and mobile devices with a single-player campaign focused on saving your brother or sister from Dorsilla the Witch.

Gameplay

You start by walking around town collecting candy and trading cards while talking to neighbors who give you quests. These activities fill your inventory before you enter Combat Mode. Battles happen in turn-based strategy format where you select actions like attacking, using items, or activating special costume abilities. Each outfit provides different stats and skills. A robot suit might boost defense while a dinosaur costume offers high damage output. You manage a party of three characters including your kidnapped sibling once you reach them. The pacing mixes light exploration with strategic fights that require switching costumes to counter specific enemy types. Controls are simple point-and-click interactions on PC or standard controller inputs on consoles.

What Players Think

Players rate this title highly with an IGDB score of 77.9 based on 91 ratings. The community mood leans toward nostalgic and fun rather than intense or challenging. Average playtime sits around 8 hours for a standard run through the story. Completion rates show that only 27.1 percent of users unlock all 21 achievements, suggesting some side quests or difficult battles might trip people up. Review snippets often mention the charming art style and the creative costume system as standout features. Many players note the game feels like a classic JRPG but with a modern Halloween twist. The low historical price of 1.49 dollars on WinGameStore makes it an accessible entry point for those curious about Double Fine work.

PlayPile's Take

This game works well if you want a short, story-driven RPG without complex mechanics. The 21 achievements are tough enough to keep completionists engaged but the main path is straightforward. At under two dollars on PC, it offers excellent value compared to modern releases. You do not need to master deep strategy systems to enjoy the campaign. The costume switching adds variety to battles without overwhelming the player. Avoid this if you prefer long playtimes or complex skill trees. Finish the story in one weekend and move on to other titles unless you care about 100 percent completion.

Storyline

It's Halloween Night in Auburn Pines and bickering twins Wren & Reynold are the new kids in town, ready for some fun, scares and candy! In the beginning cutscene, you must choose between one of the twins. The one you DO pick gets to wear the robot costume, while the one you DON'T pick ends up in a silly but rather convincing candy corn costume. When your brother/sister is kidnapped by monsters who have mistaken him/her for a giant, talking candy corn, it's up to you and the magic of Halloween to go on a rescue mission and save him/her from the monsters and their wicked Commander - Dorsilla the Witch.
