About Costume Quest

Costume Quest is a lighthearted RPG with turn-based combat from Double Fine Productions, released in 2010. Set on Halloween night, it follows Wren or Reynold, twins in the town of Auburn Pines, as they rescue their sibling from a witch named Dorsilla. Players collect candy and items in suburban neighborhoods, a carnival, and a monster-infested mall. The game blends exploration with battles where homemade costumes grant unique abilities. Developed by lead animator Tasha Harris, it leans into quirky Halloween humor and simple RPG mechanics. A bite-sized experience designed for casual play, it’s less about deep lore and more about charming chaos.

Gameplay

You spend most sessions trick-or-treating, collecting candy, cards, and stamps to level up. Every house and shop offers resources or quests. When monsters attack, you shift to turn-based combat: costumes like a robot or dragon unlock special moves. Battles emphasize positioning and elemental weaknesses. For example, the robot costume’s laser counters ghouls with armor. Sessions typically last 20, 30 minutes, though progression is slow. Controls are straightforward, mouse or buttons for menu navigation. The game’s charm lies in its goofy costume designs and the satisfaction of upgrading abilities, but combat can feel repetitive after a few hours.

What Players Think

Community ratings on IGDB average 77.9/100 from 91 users. PlayPile data shows 68% of players finish the game, with average playtime at 14 hours. Moods lean nostalgic and cheerful, though 22% of reviews call it “too simplistic.” Critics praise its creativity, with one calling it “Double Fine’s most family-friendly gem.” However, 45% of players cite low replay value. Achievement completion is high (89% average), but only 33% unlock all costume variations. Forum chatter highlights its role as a cult classic, with fans appreciating the Halloween aesthetic despite pacing issues.

PlayPile's Take

Costume Quest is best for players who enjoy whimsical RPGs with minimal grind. At $9.99 (current price), it’s a low-risk purchase for fans of Double Fine’s quirky style. The game’s 14-hour runtime and 68% completion rate suggest it’s satisfying as a short story but lacks longevity. With 34 achievements and a charming art style, it’s worth trying if you miss retro Halloween nostalgia. Not a must-play, but a solid example of Double Fine’s early creative spark.

Storyline

It's Halloween Night in Auburn Pines and bickering twins Wren & Reynold are the new kids in town, ready for some fun, scares and candy! In the beginning cutscene, you must choose between one of the twins. The one you DO pick gets to wear the robot costume, while the one you DON'T pick ends up in a silly but rather convincing candy corn costume. When your brother/sister is kidnapped by monsters who have mistaken him/her for a giant, talking candy corn, it's up to you and the magic of Halloween to go on a rescue mission and save him/her from the monsters and their wicked Commander - Dorsilla the Witch.
