About

Cotton: Fantastic Night Dreams is a 1991 arcade shooter where you guide a witch through candy-themed levels to collect seven magical items and banish darkness. The gameplay focuses on fast-paced shooting, power-up management, and navigating colorful, whimsical stages filled with enemies and hazards. Your character gains abilities as the game progresses letting you unleash explosive attacks and customize your playstyle. The story involves retrieving Willow candies scattered by monsters to restore light to a fairyland setting though the narrative remains light and secondary to the action. The game stands out for its vibrant visuals and tight controls which hold up despite its age. It has appeared on over a dozen platforms from arcade cabinets to Neo Geo Pocket Color with the 1999 PlayStation port blending improved audio from later versions with the original gameplay. Community ratings average around 8.5/10 on retro gaming sites praising its addictive difficulty curve and nostalgic charm. While the Neo Geo Pocket Color version simplifies graphics due to hardware limits the core experience remains intact making it accessible for modern players.

Storyline

Darkness has fallen over the land. The secret to bringing the morning and restoring light is with the seven coloured Willow candies of Fairyland, each of which is currently held by an evil monster. The fairy Silk leaves Fairyland to seek help, and comes across the powerful witch Cotton. Cotton has little interest in saving the world, but does have a sweet tooth for Willow candies. Silk promises Cotton that if she gathers all of the Willows, they will turn into a giant Willow.
