Dark Wraith is a turn-based RPG that mixes first-person exploration with grid-based dungeon navigation. You play as Zion, a magic user searching for a kidnapped girl in a town haunted by a recurring ritual. The game lets you gather up to three other characters to join your squad though you don’t design them, each is introduced through the story. Combat unfolds in a top-down grid with enemies appearing as you move through levels. Leveling up gives you control over skill and attribute points adding a strategic layer to progression. The fixed cast and linear party growth set it apart from other dungeon crawlers. While enemies and dungeon layouts follow classic formulas the lack of character customization might frustrate some players. Released in 1989 for Japan’s PC-9800 platform it sticks closely to the formula that made Wizardry and Bard’s Tale popular with a few mechanical quirks. The story is straightforward but direct focusing on rescue missions and ritualistic threats. It’s a relic of early RPG design more about methodical play than open-ended choices.
