Dawn of Kagura: Keika's Story mixes visual novel storytelling with roguelike dungeon crawls. As the disciplined priestess Keika, you navigate randomized floors filled with youkai enemies to battle and recruit. Each run blends turn-based combat with narrative choices that shape your party and approach. The story follows Keika's quest to clear a village of rogue spirits while proving her superiority over her absent-minded younger sister. Between fights, static illustrations and dialogue advance the light-hearted yet driven character dynamics. The game stands out for its crisp art style and tight procedural generation. Players note the dungeons shift meaningfully each playthrough, encouraging fresh strategies. While combat mechanics lean familiar, the pacing balances action with character moments effectively. With a runtime around 15-20 hours and branching paths, it offers modest replay value without overpromising. A quieter entry in the youkai genre that prioritizes sisterly banter as much as spectral battles.
When Keika receives a request to vanquish youkai, her younger sister, Hatsuka, is already out on another quest. Determined to set a good example for her less disciplined sibling, who often fails to show up to training, Keika visits the village Shinto priest who made the request. This priest tells her of a giant monkey youkai who has led other youkai on a rampage in and around his village. She confidently accepts the request alone, believing that her powers as a priestess would help overcome them...
