Dead of Darkness is a 2D survival-horror game where you play a private investigator stranded on a remote island. You scavenge for resources, avoid grotesque enemies, and solve environmental puzzles to uncover a town’s hidden menace. Combat is rare and risky, most of the time you’re sneaking, hiding, or running. The island’s crumbling architecture and eerie radio chatter build a tense, claustrophobic mood that lingers even when the action pauses. The game leans into slow-burn dread with its shifting enemy patterns and unpredictable threats. Players report a 73% completion rate among those who start, often citing the oppressive atmosphere and resource management as key challenges. Available on multiple platforms including Switch, it’s a portable horror fix with minimal combat and maximal paranoia. The 1985 setting feels underused compared to the game’s potential, but the core mechanics keep you glued to every creak and shadow.
England, 1985. Private investigator Miles Windham is asked to help the local police on a missing persons investigation on Velvet Island. But once he arrives on the island, he soon realizes that the residents are behaving strangely. Nobody seems to be interested in clearing up the case. In fact, there is a growing hostility towards the investigator that feels as though it is becoming stronger by the minute. It doesn't take long until the situation escalates and Miles finds himself in a struggle for his own survival.
