About Deadlight

Deadlight arrived on PC and Xbox 360 in August 2012 as a cinematic survival platformer from Tequila Works. The game follows Randall Wayne through a post-apocalyptic Seattle after a viral outbreak in 1986 decimated society. You play as one of the few survivors searching for his wife and daughter while navigating a world overrun by the undead, known here as Shadows. The visual style leans heavily on high contrast black and white with splashes of red to highlight threats or interactive elements. This is a single player experience where you manage limited resources and time while moving through dangerous environments to uncover what happened to your family.

Gameplay

You control Randall using simple directional inputs to run, jump, and climb across rooftops and through flooded city streets. The core loop involves sprinting away from zombies, solving environmental puzzles to open paths, and managing a shrinking daylight timer that forces you to move quickly before night falls. Many sections are scripted sequences where you must time your movements perfectly to avoid getting caught by Shadows or falling into hazards like electric fences. You cannot fight the enemies directly in most situations. Instead you rely on stealth and quick reflexes to survive. Occasional segments let you wield a weapon against specific threats, but the tension comes from the constant pressure of the environment closing in on you.

What Players Think

Players on PlayPile have rated Deadlight with an average score of 70.4 out of 100 based on 133 community ratings. The prevailing mood among critics and users is that the game feels more like a linear interactive movie than a traditional platformer. Average playtime sits around six to seven hours for a standard run, though completionists spend longer hunting for all collectibles. Some reviews mention the short length as a drawback while others praise the tight pacing and atmosphere. The achievement list contains 47 trophies, with players noting that the later levels demand significantly more precision than the early tutorial sections. Community sentiment remains divided between those who love the story-driven approach and those who want more gameplay variety.

PlayPile's Take

Deadlight is a solid choice if you enjoy short, narrative-heavy adventures that prioritize atmosphere over mechanics. The game costs around ten dollars on most digital storefronts and offers 47 achievements to chase down. It works best for players willing to accept limited interactivity in exchange for a strong emotional story and stylish visuals. Do not expect deep combat systems or open world exploration here. The final verdict is that it delivers a memorable experience despite its brevity and linear design, making it worth playing once for the full 1986 Seattle setting.

Storyline

The story of the game takes place in 1986 in Seattle after the decimation of society following the outbreak of a virus that reanimates the dead. Randall Wayne is a survivor of the event and has since been separated from his family of his wife, Shannon, and daughter Lydia. Randall had joined a pack of survivors formed of his friend Ben, an officer named Sam and two sisters, Stella and Karla. Randall is seen killing Karla in the beginning of the game due to her being bitten and infected. When the others return and confront him, "Shadows", the term for the undead, struggle to get inside their room. The others are able to get away through a vent but Randall gets stuck in the room and tells them to get to a safe area aptly called the "Safe Point". Randall is able to escape the area alive and begin traversing the dilapidated Seattle world.
