Defender brings the classic arcade shooter to a tiny handheld screen. You pilot a ship that must protect colonists while avoiding enemy invaders and their mothership. The gameplay loops quickly as you move left or right, shoot down threats, and rescue dropped people before they vanish. Gakken adapted the original coin-op mechanics into this portable LCD format, keeping the core action intact despite the limited display size. This version strips away everything except the essential shooting and movement. It lacks the complex scoring systems of the arcade but captures the frantic pace well enough for a quick session. The single player mode offers straightforward fun without any multiplayer options to complicate things. Since it is an LCD title, you get instant feedback on every hit with no loading times or lag. It feels like a solid tribute to the original, even if the graphics are just simple pixel shapes moving back and forth on a gray screen.
