Demon Runner: The Forsaken is a 2D platformer where you play as Varcasium, a soul bound to the Damascian Caverns. Navigate procedurally generated levels filled with traps and enemies by collecting souls to unlock movement abilities. Each new power lets you access previously blocked areas and escape deeper into the underworld. The game offers five difficulty tiers and two endings depending on how well you master the tight controls and puzzle logic. The game’s challenge has earned it a 4.2/5 rating from players, with many praising its punishing but fair design. Thirty levels of backtracking and exploration keep the Metroidvania structure feeling fresh, especially with randomized enemy placements on higher difficulties. Retro-style pixel art and a relentless sense of urgency make it stand out among indie platformers. Speedrunners have already carved out optimized routes, but casual players should expect to die a lot.
Varcasium passed away before his time and made a deal with the dark lord of the underworld. The deal was, if he can make it out of the Damascian Caverns, then he will be given a second chance at life. If he fails, then he will spend all eternity in the worst parts of the underworld. The dark lord agrees to this deal and Varcasium starts in the deepest parts of the caves. While there, he will need to collect soul and use the soul to free other entities that are trapped. These entities will grant you the abilities that are required to beat the game and find all of the secret areas. It is up to you to free Varcasium and get his freedom back.
