"I really tried to enjoy Depths of Sanity. It’s a unique take on the Metroidvania genre, and it introduces some neat ideas. Sadly the execution of those ideas were held back by the awkward and consistently problematic controls themselves. As a result, even though the game has really great atmosphere and interesting concepts, most fans of the genre will likely lose patience incredibly quickly."

Depths of Dagon casts you as a hapless explorer descending a nightmarish abyss. Each run mixes grid-based movement with random room layouts and Lovecraftian horrors lurking around corners. You manage limited resources like sanity and health while collecting occult relics and upgrading abilities. Combat is tactical but brutal with phases of frenetic action. The pixel art drips with eerie atmosphere but the real tension comes from knowing every decision tightens the noose. Made in 48 hours for a game jam this title defied expectations. A cult following grew around its punishing difficulty and clever design. While short it delivers 8-10 hours of tense exploration with high replay value. The PC version supports modding opening endless customization. Its 82% on Metacritic shows how this tiny team carved something memorable from the genre's bones.
