Desert Commander is a turn-based strategy game where you build and deploy a team of nine unit types plus a headquarters. Each mission gives a set number of units to assign, letting you balance your forces without exceeding the limit. You take turns moving and attacking across a grid, with units gaining or losing mobility based on terrain. Every unit has limited ammo and fuel, requiring you to land them at specific buildings like airports to resupply. Victory means destroying the enemy’s HQ. The game stands out for its straightforward yet strategic unit interactions. Certain units crush others while struggling against the rest, creating a rock-paper-scissors dynamic. Difficulty scales by giving the CPU more units in later scenarios, but its tactics stay static. Resource management and terrain awareness matter more than complex AI, making each match feel like a test of planning over reflexes. Released in 1988 for Famicom and NES, it’s a dated but functional example of early tactical gaming.
