deSpiria drops you into the shattered future of Japan in 2070 where a shadowy group called the Church rules after World War III. You play Allure Valentine a spy posing as a train passenger when the vehicle plummets into a tunnel after a crash. The game blends first-person exploration with RPG combat. You interact with objects by pressing a button to reveal clickable hotspots while battling foes using elemental "mind attacks" from summoned allies. Dialogue and movement play out in static panels evoking classic adventure games. The first-person RPG formula feels fresh with its focus on psychic summons and a claustrophobic tunnel-based opener. Dreamcast owners seeking a niche 2000s RPG might appreciate its quirky mix of turn-based combat and point-and-click sleuthing. Though largely forgotten today its tunnel-crawl design and love-as-a-weapon mechanics carve out a niche.
