Destiny dropped on September 9, 2014 from Bungie and Activision across PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One. It mashes first-person shooting with RPG progression in a shared-world setting. The story picks up after the Collapse wiped out humanity's Golden Age. You play as a Guardian resurrected by a Ghost to fight back against the Darkness. Instead of a traditional MMO where everyone sees each other constantly, this game uses on-the-fly matchmaking to put you in matches for specific tasks or battles. The engine handles global illumination and real-time dynamic lighting to keep the solar system looking crisp. You spend time hopping between locations like the Cosmodrome and the Tower to grab gear and fix your ship while engaging enemies.
Sessions revolve around shooting aliens and looting better guns in a loop that feels familiar yet distinct. You navigate menus to upgrade stats, then jump into strikes or public events with random teammates. The core loop involves clearing out areas of Fallen scavengers or stronger forces before grabbing loot drops that actually change your build. Bungie's hopper technology handles matchmaking quickly so you do not wait long for a squad. Controls feel tight and responsive during firefights, though the story missions sometimes drag on too long. You repair your jumpship to unlock travel across the solar system rather than just walking everywhere. Combat requires quick reflexes as enemies swarm in chaotic waves while you manage cover and reload times.
Players rate this title at 75.3 out of 100 on IGDB based on 484 ratings. The community vibes lean heavily toward cooperative play since many users tagged it as such with three votes. Others describe the experience as chaotic or intense, reflecting the difficulty spikes found in higher-level content. A few players noted the story-driven aspects while one person called it atmospheric. Average completion rates suggest many quit before seeing all endings, and average playtime varies wildly depending on how much grinding you do. Review snippets often praise the gunplay but criticize the repetitive mission structures after the first hour. The mood shifts from intense during raids to cooperative when tackling public events with strangers who actually help.
This game costs money upfront and offers plenty of achievements for completionists who enjoy shooting aliens. It works best if you like looting gear and teaming up with others rather than playing alone. The shared-world mechanics create social moments that traditional shooters lack, but the story can feel thin after the initial hours. You should buy this if you want a shooter with RPG stats to tweak over hundreds of hours. Do not expect a deep narrative compared to dedicated story games. Finish your first mission and see if the loot loop keeps you engaged before spending more time.
Setting Destiny is set in the distant future, after an event referred to as the Collapse ended the Golden Age that was started by the discovery of The Traveler, and pushed humanity to the brink of extinction. The force responsible for the Collapse is known as The Darkness, and indirectly acts as the primary antagonist. Battles against the forces of The Darkness are fought at various locations throughout the Solar System. Plot The game begins with the player's Ghost resurrecting them as a Guardian, after having been dead for an unknown length of time. The Guardian is quickly forced to fight Fallen who have inhabited the ruins of the nearby Cosmodrome in Old Russia. The Guardian, with the aid of their Ghost, is able to secure a jumpship and escape to The Tower that houses the Guardians on The City border. After being outfitted and introduced to the Vanguard, and Gunsmith, the duo learn from Amanda Holliday that their Arcadia Class Jumpship is missing its Warp Drive, a component necessary for interplanetary travel. Due to the scarcity of the part and flyable jumpships in general, the Guardian is forced to return to where they found the ship in an attempt to find the part.
