About

Dinosaur is a classic dungeon-crawling RPG from Nihon Falcom that tasks you with guiding Ash, a battle-hardened mercenary, through a nightmarish world. Released in 1990, it blends turn-based combat with exploration as Ash follows a mysterious butterfly to Zamhan, a fractured realm where chaos rules. You manage his actions across grids, battling enemies and navigating abstract spaces that shift between life and death. The game emphasizes resource management and tactical positioning, with permadeath looming over every decision. Originally made for Japan-only audiences, Dinosaur saw ports to multiple PC platforms in its first years and a 2002 remake called Dinosaur Resurrection. Its surreal setting and cryptic story remain its defining traits, with environmental storytelling painting Zamhan as a twisted purgatory. Only fragments of English text appear in menus, but the game’s influence on later Falcom titles is clear. Niche and dated by modern standards, it’s a relic of early 90s RPG design that still rewards careful play.

Storyline

Ash is the legendary mercenary who is said to return from any battle alive while his allies are defeated. But in this age of peace there is no battlefield for him. Yearning for conflict he is seemingly guided by a white butterfly to Zamhan…a crawling world, in which tragedy gives birth to madness and disorder in the space between life and death, and endless resentment can become the irrelevant words of a distant age. All it can offer is chaos, and then destruction.
