About Directive 8020

Directive 8020 is a survival adventure game set in a sci-fi crisis. Developed by Supermassive Games and published by Bandai Namco, it drops players into a colony ship crash-landed on alien planet Tau Ceti f. Humanity’s last hope hinges on the crew outwitting an organism that mimics their members to kill them. Released on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S in late 2026, it blends real-time evasion, survival, and choice-driven narrative. The game’s strength lies in its tense atmosphere and branching decisions, where trust and quick reflexes determine who lives or dies. Ideal for fans of high-stakes co-op and stealth-based survival, it’s a claustrophobic sci-fi thriller with a twist: your allies might not be human.

Gameplay

Players navigate a fragile spaceship and hostile alien environment, balancing stealth and strategy. The core loop involves dodging threats in real time, sneaking past enemies, solving resource-scarce puzzles, or making split-second trust calls. The alien’s mimicry mechanic forces constant doubt: a companion could be a foe in disguise. Co-op adds layers of paranoia, as players rely on each other while suspecting betrayal. Combat is minimal; instead, survival hinges on managing oxygen, crafting tools, and choosing between risky evasions or risky alliances. Missions shift between tense stealth segments and narrative-driven choice hubs, with outcomes affecting crew morale and survival. The controls are tight, but the difficulty spikes during chase sequences, requiring precise movement to avoid instant death.

What Players Think

PlayPile data shows 83% of players finish the base story, averaging 12-15 hours. Completion rates for 100% runs drop to 28%, reflecting punishing endgame challenges. Community moods lean “nervous” (62%) and “curious” (31%), with 7% labeling it “frustrating” due to aggressive difficulty scaling. Critics praise the “unpredictable narrative” (PC Gamer) but note repetitive stealth sections. The Metacritic score of 78 aligns with user ratings, with 82% recommending it for co-op. Achievement hunters track 45 milestones, including a rare “Alien Free World” unlock requiring zero deaths. Price points remain unlisted, but given Supermassive’s $50 average, expectations are moderate.

PlayPile's Take

Directive 8020 thrives for co-op enthusiasts and survival fans seeking narrative tension. Its mimic mechanic and real-time stakes elevate the genre, though solo play may feel repetitive. At 45% completion difficulty, it rewards patience but punishes mistakes. If you crave social deduction under pressure, this is a must-play. Skip if you dislike permadeath or prefer open-ended exploration. With 28% 100% completion, mastery feels earned but exhausting. Worth it for the first 12-15 hours, but not a long-term investment.
