Dires is a 1987 racing simulator from Bothtec, Inc. It plays out in two distinct phases. In the first, you place poles of your color inside a looping track, with a status bar tracking your remaining placements. Once all poles are set, the second phase begins: you race to knock down your own poles while dodging those placed by opponents. Hitting enemy poles bounces your craft backward, but destroying your own poles refills the status bar, letting you extend your energy. Your speed matters, slower aircraft risk being sent flying by collisions. The game’s split-phase design adds strategic depth to the fast-paced action. Early placement decisions directly impact later movement, forcing tradeoffs between density and defense. The MSX hardware handles 3D visuals with a charm that feels ahead of its time. Though its niche structure might puzzle modern players, retro fans appreciate the sharp mechanics and the way it repurposes simple shapes into dynamic obstacles. Released over four decades ago, it still holds up as a clever twist on racing sim logic.
