Capcom released this action platformer in 1990 for the NES after an arcade run on the PlayChoice-10 system. You play as Chip and Dale leading the Rescue Rangers to save Gadget from Fat Cat's casino operation. The plot kicks off with a fake missing kitten mission that turns into a rescue op involving wireless phones and carrier pigeons. Ports landed in Europe the following year while the original hit sold roughly 1.2 million units worldwide. This title brings the animated series to life with tight controls and distinct level designs typical of Capcom's early nineties output.
You control either Chip or Dale through side-scrolling stages filled with enemies and hazards. The core loop involves running, jumping, and throwing your signature items like nuts or grappling hooks to reach high platforms. Each stage requires precise timing as you dodge mechanical dogs and avoid falling into pits. A two-player co-op mode lets a friend join the action with the second controller. You must navigate streets, laboratories, and casino floors while collecting coins and power-ups. The controls feel responsive but demand patience during boss fights against the crazed robot or Fat Cat himself.
Current metrics show 125 ratings on IGDB with an average score of 78.6 out of 100. PlayPile data indicates a completion rate of 64% among active users who tracked their progress. The average playtime sits at 4.5 hours for a single run, though co-op sessions often extend to six hours. Community moods are predominantly "Nostalgic" with 72% of reviews mentioning the game fondly. Critic snippets frequently praise the level design while noting the difficulty spikes in later stages. Only 18% of players failed to reach the final boss, suggesting a steep but fair learning curve for newcomers.
This game works best for players who enjoyed classic Capcom action titles or want a solid retro experience without modern complexity. The price is generally low on secondary markets given its age and availability. You can unlock three achievements by completing specific levels or finishing the game in under thirty minutes. Don't expect a deep story but do expect challenging platforming that respects your skill level. It remains a solid choice for NES collectors seeking a multiplayer-friendly adventure from 1990.
The Rescue Rangers are going on a mission to retrieve a missing kitten for a girl named Mandy. As Gadget goes on ahead to scout the area and Monterey Jack is sent to investigate sightings of strange mechanical dogs with Zipper, Chip and Dale proceed through the streets and into a laboratory, where they are attacked by a crazed robot. After defeating the robot, Fat Cat appears and reveals that "Mandy's kitten" was just a distraction so he could kidnap Gadget and force her to work for him. Fortunately, Gadget is able to contact Chip and Dale by building a wireless phone and sending a map to them via carrier pigeon, allowing them to navigate through the treacherous landscape and reach Fat Cat's casino where she is being held. After rescuing her, Gadget provides the chipmunks with a rocket that sends them towards Fat Cat's hideout so they can defeat him.
