About Disney's Tarzan

Eurocom developed this action platformer for Activision in 1999. It launched on N64, PlayStation, PC, PSP, and PS3. The title follows a young orphan raised by gorillas who must master jungle survival before facing the hunter Clayton. You start as a child learning to climb trees and swing from vines. The story adapts loosely from the animated film but focuses on gameplay progression rather than cinematic fidelity. Players choose between easy, medium, or hard settings that change how much guidance Turk offers during tutorial sections. This game targets fans of classic 3D platformers from the late nineties who want a straightforward adventure through dense foliage.

Gameplay

You control Tarzan across multiple levels filled with obstacles and enemies. Early stages focus on basic movement like climbing vines, swinging between trees, and punching small animals. As you progress, you fight baboons, eagles, and eventually human soldiers led by Clayton. The combat system relies on simple button mashing and timing your jumps to land attacks on foes. Turk provides helpful tips in lower difficulty modes but disappears entirely when you play on hard mode. Each level requires you to reach a specific endpoint while collecting items that track your progress. Sessions involve constant swinging mechanics that demand precise timing to avoid falling into hazards below.

What Players Think

PlayPile data shows mixed feelings about this title. IGDB rates it at 70.5 out of 100 based on 133 user ratings. Average completion time sits around eight hours for standard playthroughs. Community mood analysis reveals a split between nostalgia and frustration with outdated controls. Many players note that the easy mode feels too hand-holding while hard mode ramps up difficulty sharply without much warning. Review snippets highlight the satisfying swing mechanics but criticize repetitive enemy encounters. Achievement hunters find the unlockables sparse compared to modern standards. Some users mention enjoying the game more on N64 due to smoother frame rates. The overall sentiment suggests a solid but flawed entry in the genre.

PlayPile's Take

This platformer works best for players who want a short, nostalgic trip back to 1999. The price point on digital stores is usually low, making it an affordable option for collectors. You will earn several achievements related to finishing levels and defeating bosses without taking damage. The game lacks the polish of contemporary titles but delivers fun moments during its swinging sequences. Avoid this if you dislike linear level design or stiff combat animations. Stick with the medium difficulty setting to balance challenge and guidance from Turk. It is a decent diversion for a rainy afternoon rather than a definitive experience in the adventure genre.

Storyline

Loosely based on the events of the film, the player takes control of the eponymous Tarzan, an orphan child who was adopted and raised by gorillas. At the beginning of the game Tarzan is still a young kid who has to learn different skills from the gorillas such as climbing trees, swinging down branches or fighting small but aggressive wild animals. He eventually grows up to be a strong and skilled man who must defend himself and his fellow animal brothers' home, the jungle, from hunters led by the evil hunter Clayton.
