About Dofus

Dofus is a tactical turn-based MMO that Ankama Games released back in September 2004 for PC, Mac, Linux, and web browsers. The story starts with a dragon named Bolgrot arriving in Amakna and the tragic death of a young hero. Six magical eggs called DOFUS were found inside the beast, and their power caused chaos across the land. You play as an adventurer exploring this world to find those lost relics while fighting monsters and other players. The game mixes traditional RPG elements with grid-based strategy battles. It runs directly in your browser or as a client, letting you jump into a persistent online world filled with quests, crafting, and guild wars without needing a massive download every time you want to log on.

Gameplay

You move your character around a hexagonal grid where every square matters for positioning. Combat happens in turns where you manage action points to move, attack, or cast spells. You must watch enemy ranges and control the flow of battle rather than just spamming skills. The game offers various character classes called Adamsa that each have distinct abilities and playstyles. Outside of fighting, you gather resources, craft items, and trade with other players in a player-driven economy. Many sessions involve forming groups to tackle dungeons or organizing large-scale battles for territory control. The interface lets you set up complex action bars and manage inventory while exploring the open world. You can play solo or team up with friends to take down tough bosses that require coordinated tactics.

What Players Think

Players on PlayPile have logged over 2,400 hours per account on average, showing deep engagement with the systems. The community rating sits at 4.3 out of 5 stars based on 18,500 reviews, with completion rates hitting 67 percent for main storylines. Mood trackers show 72 percent of recent players feel "satisfied" while playing, compared to only 8 percent who report frustration during combat. Twitch data places the game at rank 49 in current viewership, proving it still draws a massive live audience decades after launch. Critics praise the strategic depth but note the steep learning curve for new users. Achievement completion rates vary wildly by class, with the "Master Tactician" badge earned by only 3 percent of the player base.

PlayPile's Take

This title is worth your time if you enjoy slow-paced strategy games and have hours to invest in a persistent world. The entry price starts at free but the best content requires a subscription or microtransactions for cosmetic items and convenience features. You will find over 100 achievements to chase, though the hardest ones demand hundreds of hours of grinding. Do not expect a fast-paced action experience or quick victories. The game rewards patience and understanding its complex mechanics rather than reflexes. If you can handle a slow learning curve and want a world that still feels alive after twenty years, Dofus delivers a solid foundation for long-term play.

Storyline

A long time ago a dragon named Bolgrot arrived in the eternal Province of Amakna. The young Rykke Errel was the only one courageous enough to face the terrible creature. Instead of reducing him to dust as it could easily have done, the dragon bowed down before the young knight and swore loyalty to him. Months passed by and Rykke met Helsephine, a young enchantress, and fell madly in love with her. When he introduced Helsephine to Bolgrot, Rykke would never have guessed what was about to happen. The dragon, mad with rage, killed the sweet Helsephine and flew away, destroying everything on its way. Rykke chased the dragon into his cave. When he found it, the old friends confronted each other in a titanic fight. Using his weapons and magic, Rykke succeeded bringing Bolgrot down. But fatally injured, the young hero died short after. Looking for an explanation about the sudden violence of Bolgrot, the wise men of Amakna discovered within the entrails of the dragon six unusually colored eggs that were called DOFUS. Later on, it was discovered that when these eggs were reunited their power was absolute. Absolute, but also unstable. The wise men decided to conceal those terrible relics from the rest of the world. During the following centuries, the secret of the existence of the DOFUS was so well kept that people eventually forgot all about them. But a cursed day among others, the guardians of the secret discovered that the DOFUS had disappeared. The news quickly spread, arousing terror and covetousness. It didn't take long for adventurers to show up in Amakna, attracted by the prospect of glory or plunder. From then on, the destiny of Amakna was uncertain and the appearance of numerous creatures as terrifying as they're unknown added to the confusion.
