Donkey Kong Circus is a single-player arcade game from 1984 that tasks you with controlling Donkey Kong as he balances on a barrel. Your goal is to keep pineapples airborne while dodging bursts of fire from barrels below. The gameplay is fast and frantic, requiring precise timing to prevent the bananas from dropping or Donkey from getting singed. It’s a simple but twitchy challenge that leans into the hardware limitations of the Game & Watch, turning small screens and basic controls into a test of reflexes. The game’s oddball premise stands out, it’s one of few entries in the Game & Watch lineup where Mario isn’t the focus, instead casting Donkey Kong as an unwilling circus performer. Its code shares roots with a Mickey Mouse title, leading to a mix-up in model numbers (DC-95/MK-96) that hints at rushed development. Neither this game nor its Panorama Screen counterpart ever reached Japan, making them curiosities among collectors. While brief, its chaotic energy and quirky concept keep it memorable for fans of retro handheld oddities.
Mario was a carpenter who had come in possession of a Kong and his son. Mario, unwittingly, mistreated the ape by putting him in a circus. In the circus, Donkey Kong had to use his legs to balance the barrel he was on, juggle pineapples, and avoid deadly flames.
