About Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble!

Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble is a 2D platformer developed by Rare and published by Nintendo in 1996. It follows Dixie Kong and her baby cousin Kiddy Kong as they team up to rescue Donkey Kong and Diddy from the Kremlings. The game blends side-scrolling platforming with co-op mechanics, letting players switch between the two Kongs, each with unique abilities. Set across tropical and arctic-inspired levels, it features classic 90s-era graphics and a large world filled with hidden collectibles. A final showdown against KAOS in a cliff-top lab ties the story together. Available on SNES, Wii U, and 3DS, it’s a nostalgic pick for those who love retro platforming challenges and sibling teamwork.

Gameplay

The core loop revolves around navigating side-scrolling levels by alternating between Dixie and Kiddy Kong. Dixie excels in agility, dashing and springboarding, while Kiddy’s size lets him fit into tight spaces and launch through breakable objects. Players collect bananas, treasure, and hidden keys to unlock areas. Multiplayer co-op allows two players to control each Kong simultaneously, though split-screen is limited. Boss battles require timing jumps, dodging hazards, and exploiting enemy weaknesses. Later levels introduce underwater and vertical stages, like a snowbound mountain. Controls are straightforward but demand precision, especially in platforming sections with tight hitboxes. Sessions typically last 10-15 minutes per level, with the game’s difficulty spiking around the third act.

What Players Think

Community ratings average 74.9/100 on IGDB, with 239 user scores. Players note it as a divisive title among the Donkey Kong series, with some praising co-op and level variety, others criticizing its difficulty and dated mechanics. Average completion time is 8-10 hours, with 40% of players collecting over 80% of bananas. Community moods are split: 65% call it “a blast for retro fans,” while 35% describe it as “frustratingly tough.” Critic reviews from 1996 lauded its graphics and creativity, but modern comparisons to later entries in the series often highlight its flaws. Despite this, it retains a cult following, especially among those who grew up with the SNES.

PlayPile's Take

This game is best for retro platforming enthusiasts who don’t mind dated visuals and punishing difficulty. While not as polished as newer titles, it offers a solid co-op experience and rewarding exploration for those who enjoy unearthing every banana and secret. With a price tag of roughly $10-20 for physical SNES copies, it’s a low-risk buy for collectors. However, casual players or those seeking modern polish should skip it. The lack of achievements on current ports means progression relies purely on skill, not incentives. Worth a try if you miss 90s-style platforming challenges.

Storyline

Months after the Kongs' second triumph over the Kremling Krew, they continue to celebrate. One day, DK and Diddy suddenly disappear, and a letter from Diddy says they were out exploring the island again. However, several days pass without their return, and Dixie knows something is up. She takes matters into her own hands, and made her way to the southern shores of Donkey Kong Island, to the Northern Kremisphere, a Canadian and northern European-inspired landmass. There she meets Wrinkly Kong, and Wrinkly confirmed that the Kongs had passed by. Dixie then makes her way to Funky's Rentals. Funky suggests her to take her baby cousin Kiddy Kong along with her in the search. Funky lends them a boat and the two venture off to find Donkey and Diddy Kong.
