About Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble!

Rare published this Super Nintendo classic on November 18, 1996 as the third main entry in their flagship platformer series. Players control Dixie Kong and her baby cousin Kiddy Kong after the Kremling Krew kidnaps Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong again. The game launched on SNES and later appeared on Wii U, Wii, and New Nintendo 3DS via virtual console or backward compatibility. You cross six distinct worlds across an island setting to track down the missing pair. The premise is simple enough that anyone can pick it up while the level design offers genuine challenge for veterans of the genre. This title remains a staple for fans of pixel-perfect side-scrolling action.

Gameplay

You switch between Dixie and Kiddy during single-player runs to solve puzzles or defeat enemies. Dixie uses her ponytail to float in mid-air, allowing you to cross wide gaps or hover over spikes. Kiddy moves faster and carries a heavier weight that crushes certain barriers when thrown by Dixie. Multiplayer mode lets a second player control the other character simultaneously for co-op fun. Levels feature barrel cannons, underwater sections with limited air, and boss fights against giant Kremling leaders. You collect bananas to unlock secret areas while watching your health bar shrink from enemy attacks or environmental hazards. Every stage requires precise timing to avoid falling into bottomless pits or getting crushed by rolling boulders.

What Players Think

Critics and players have kept this title relevant for decades with an IGDB score of 74.9 based on 239 ratings. The community average playtime sits around 8 hours for a standard run while completionists spend over 15 hours hunting every collectible. Player reviews frequently mention the satisfying controls and tight level design as reasons to return. Moods are generally positive with users praising the music and visual fidelity compared to other SNES games of the era. Some players note the difficulty spikes in later levels but appreciate the fair checkpoint system. The achievement data shows a high completion rate among dedicated fans who have mastered every secret entrance.

PlayPile's Take

Donkey Kong Country 3 is worth your time if you enjoy tight platforming mechanics and distinct character abilities. The price point varies depending on your console version, but SNES cartridges often sell for more than digital copies on modern hardware. You can unlock over a dozen achievements by finding all the secrets in each world. This game lacks the modern quality-of-life features of new releases so expect some frustration with older level layouts. It stands as one of the best 2D platformers ever made without needing flashy graphics or long cutscenes to impress you.

Storyline

Months after the Kongs' second triumph over the Kremling Krew, they continue to celebrate. One day, DK and Diddy suddenly disappear, and a letter from Diddy says they were out exploring the island again. However, several days pass without their return, and Dixie knows something is up. She takes matters into her own hands, and made her way to the southern shores of Donkey Kong Island, to the Northern Kremisphere, a Canadian and northern European-inspired landmass. There she meets Wrinkly Kong, and Wrinkly confirmed that the Kongs had passed by. Dixie then makes her way to Funky's Rentals. Funky suggests her to take her baby cousin Kiddy Kong along with her in the search. Funky lends them a boat and the two venture off to find Donkey and Diddy Kong.
