Donkey Kong Junior follows the original in having players guide the titular character through four distinct stages to rescue his dad. This time, Mario turns villain, trapping Donkey Kong in a cage and thwarting rescue attempts. Each level introduces new mechanics, climbing vines, bouncing on springboards, swinging from chains, and requires collecting keys while dodging hazards. The challenge comes from tight platforming and Mario’s persistent interference, whether he’s tossing fireballs or shifting the environment to block progress. The game stands out for flipping the dynamic of the first Donkey Kong, shifting control from Mario to the rescued character. While the core loop of avoiding dangers and gathering items remains, the varied level designs keep the pace fresh. It’s a shorter but sharp follow-up that retains the arcade-era difficulty. With a completion rate of around 35% on MAME, it’s clear the sequel maintains the original’s punishing reputation while carving its own path.
After the events of Donkey Kong, Mario has captured Donkey Kong as revenge for kidnapping his lady friend and Donkey Kong Jr. has to save him. However, every time Donkey Kong Jr. gets close to freeing his father, Mario just pushes him further away.
